How tip calculator works

This tip calculator takes your bill amount, a tip percentage, and the number of people splitting the bill. An optional sales-tax field lets you choose the tip base: by default the tip is computed on the pre-tax subtotal (the classic convention), or on the post-tax total if you switch the selector. The tip is the tip base times the percentage; the total adds the bill, tax, and tip, and splits by the number of people.

Tip percentages vary by country and service. In the United States, 15 to 20 percent is typical for sit-down restaurant service; 18 percent is a common default. In many European and Asian countries, service is included or a smaller tip (5 to 10 percent) is customary. Adjust the percentage to match your local norm.

The calculator rounds monetary values to two decimal places (cents). When splitting, each person share is rounded independently, so the sum of individual shares may differ by a cent or two from the total. This is a normal rounding artifact.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country and service. In the US, 15 to 20 percent is standard for restaurant service. In Europe, 5 to 10 percent or rounding up is common. In Japan, tipping is not expected. The calculator lets you choose any percentage.

How do I split a bill between multiple people?

Enter the bill amount and tip percentage, then set the number of people to split by. The calculator shows the total bill (including tip) divided by the number of people, plus each person share of the tip.

Should I tip before or after tax?

Convention favors tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since the tip is for service on the food, not the tax. Enter the sales tax rate in the Tax (%) field and the calculator tips on the pre-tax subtotal by default; switch the Tip-on selector to "Post-tax total" if you prefer to tip on the full taxed amount.

How is the tip calculated?

Tip equals bill times (tip percentage divided by 100). For example, a 50 dollar bill with an 18 percent tip gives 9 dollars in tip, for a total of 59 dollars. Split between 3 people, each pays 19.67.
