Area Conversion: Factors That Square

Ten units, one square-meter pivot, and the rule that makes area different: factors square, quantities don't.

Area is where unit conversion stops being linear: the factor for a square foot is not the factor for a foot, it is the square of it. That single fact causes most area-conversion mistakes, from flooring orders to land purchases. The Area Converter keeps all ten of its units on one square-meter pivot so the squaring happens once, inside the table, and never in your head.

The full factor table

Every unit is defined by how many square meters it contains, and the converter pivots through that base exactly once per query:

1 mm² = 0.000001 m² (exact)
1 cm² = 0.0001 m² (exact)
1 m² = 1 m² (the pivot)
1 in² = 0.00064516 m² (exact)
1 ft² = 0.092903 m² (exact: 0.09290304)
1 yd² = 0.836127 m² (exact: 0.83612736 = 9 ft²)
1 ha = 10,000 m² (exact)
1 acre = 4,046.86 m² (exact: 4,046.8564224)
1 km² = 1,000,000 m² (exact)
1 mi² = 2,589,988.11 m² (exact: 2,589,988.110336)

Metric entries are exact by definition; the customary ones are stored rounded to the precision shown, with the exact values alongside. The rounding error is far below a part per million, invisible at room scale and marginal even at survey scale — but knowing which figures are definitions and which are displays is what makes a conversion trustworthy.

Derive any area factor by squaring

Because area is length squared, every factor above follows from a length you already know: 1 ft is 0.3048 m exactly, so 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m²; 1 yd is 0.9144 m, so 1 yd² = 0.83612736 m²; 1 mi is 1,609.344 m, so 1 mi² = 2,589,988.110336 m². This gives a built-in consistency check: convert a side with the Length Converter, square the result, and you land on the same number the area tool reports directly. The rule to respect is that the factor gets squared, not the quantity — converting 20 ft to meters and calling that the area in square meters is the classic error. The same compounding continues one dimension up into volume, which is the subject of Volume and Area Conversions.

The hectare is a shape, not just a size

A hectare is 10,000 m², which is exactly a square 100 m on a side — that geometric definition is why the unit feels natural to anyone who works land: a hectare is a two-minute walk around. The acre is older and odder, descended from the furlong-and-chain survey: 660 ft by 66 ft, or 43,560 ft², which is why its metric equivalent, 4,046.8564224 m², has no round shape at all. One hectare holds 2.471 acres, one square mile holds 640 acres, and those three numbers — 2.471, 640, and 4,046.86 — are the ones land listings quietly depend on.

Matching the unit to the scale

Most awkward area numbers are just unit mismatches. Square millimeters and centimeters belong to cross-sections — household cable is sized in mm², stamps in cm². Square meters cover rooms and apartments; hectares cover fields and estates; square kilometers and square miles cover cities and countries. When a result would carry more than six zeros, the converter switches to scientific notation rather than print a number nobody can read — 1 km² in mm² comes back as 1e12, which is exact, merely compact. Choosing the unit that matches the scale is half of getting an answer you can sanity-check.

Try it yourself

Enter a floor area you know — say a 500 ft² studio — into the Area Converter and read 46.4515 m², 0.004645 hectares, and the other eight units at once. Then verify the squaring rule with the Length Converter by converting 22.36 ft to meters and squaring it, and explore the three-dimensional version of the same compounding in Volume and Area Conversions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert square feet to square meters?
Multiply by 0.09290304 — the converter stores it as 0.092903. A 500 ft² studio is 46.4515 m². The tool returns all ten units at once, so hectares and acres appear in the same answer.
How many square meters are in an acre?
4,046.8564224, stored as 4,046.86. An acre is 43,560 ft², a legacy of the furlong-by-chain survey, which is why its metric equivalent has no round shape.
Is a hectare bigger than an acre?
Yes — a hectare is 10,000 m², a square exactly 100 m on a side, and it holds 2.471 acres. Going up again, one square mile holds exactly 640 acres.
Can I convert feet directly into square meters?
No — feet measure length and square meters measure area, different dimensions. Convert each side to meters and multiply, or square the length factor (0.3048² = 0.09290304 m² per ft²). The Length Converter handles sides; this tool handles the resulting areas.
Why did my result appear in scientific notation?
Results at a million or above switch to exponential form for readability: 1 km² in mm² is exactly 1e12. The value is precise; the notation is just compact.
