How periodic table lookup works

The periodic table organises the 118 known chemical elements by increasing atomic number (the number of protons in the nucleus). Each element has a one- or two-letter symbol (H, He, Li...), a name (Hydrogen, Helium...) and an atomic mass expressed in atomic mass units.

Elements are arranged into periods (horizontal rows 1-7) and groups (vertical columns 1-18). They are also grouped by category — alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, post-transition metals, metalloids, nonmetals, halogens, noble gases, lanthanides and actinides — which predicts their chemical behaviour.

Enter a symbol (such as Fe), a name (such as Iron) or an atomic number (such as 26) and the tool finds the matching element and shows its full data. The lookup is case-insensitive and tries the symbol, then the exact name, then the number, then a name prefix, so 'go' finds Gold.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find an element by symbol?
Type the one- or two-letter symbol, for example 'Na' for sodium or 'Fe' for iron. The lookup is case-insensitive, so 'fe' and 'FE' both find iron.
What is the atomic mass?
The atomic mass (or standard atomic weight) is the average mass of an element's atoms in atomic mass units, weighted by natural abundance. For stable elements it is a precise decimal; for synthetic elements with no stable isotopes it is the mass number of the longest-lived isotope.
Why do some elements have no group number?
The lanthanides (elements 57-71) and actinides (89-103) belong to the f-block and are usually shown separately below the main table, so they have no main-table group number. Lanthanum (57) and Actinium (89) are placed in group 3.
Are the heaviest elements' categories certain?
No. Elements above 108 (Hassium and heavier) have only been produced as a few short-lived atoms, so their bulk chemical category is predicted, not measured. This tool labels them 'unknown'.
