How flow rate converter works

Volumetric flow — volume passing a point per unit time — is quoted in a different unit by every industry: plumbers and pump makers use gallons or liters per minute, HVAC engineers use cubic feet per minute (CFM), water utilities use cubic meters per hour, and lab pumps use milliliters per minute. This converter translates any of the twelve units into any other.

Every conversion is anchored to liters per second using exact definitions: one US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L, one imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 L and one cubic foot is exactly 28.316846592 L. The tool normalizes your value through L/s, so both directions of every pair agree.

Results are reported to 12 significant digits, with the intermediate value in L/s shown for every conversion so you can check magnitudes at a glance — 10 US gpm is 37.85 L/min, one CFM is 28.32 L/min or 7.48 gpm, and one m³/h is 16.67 L/min. All math runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How many liters per minute is 10 gallons per minute?
37.85 L/min, since one US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L. Beware the imperial gallon: 10 imperial gpm is 45.46 L/min, about 20% more, because the imperial gallon (4.54609 L) is bigger than the US one. UK plumbing data usually means imperial gallons.
What is CFM and how do I convert it?
Cubic feet per minute, the HVAC airflow unit. One CFM is 28.3168 L/min, 0.47195 L/s or 7.4805 US gpm. The common 400 CFM-per-ton rule for air conditioners equals about 187 L/s of airflow per 3.52 kW of cooling capacity.
How do I convert m³/h to gpm?
One cubic meter per hour is 4.40287 US gpm (1,000 L over 3,600 s = 0.27778 L/s). Going the other way, 1 gpm is 0.2271 m³/h. Water utility meters in m³/h and US pump curves in gpm reconcile with this single factor.
Does flow rate depend on pressure or pipe size?
The conversion doesn't — liters per minute are liters per minute wherever they flow. But the achievable flow does: narrower pipes, higher viscosity and lower pressure all reduce it. Use this converter for the units, and a pipe-sizing or pump reference for what your system can actually deliver.
