How syllable counter works

This tool splits your text into words and estimates the syllables in each one using a vowel-group heuristic: a run of consecutive vowels counts as a single syllable, a trailing silent "e" is usually dropped (except "le" endings like "turtle"), and every word is guaranteed at least one syllable.

You get the total syllable count, the number of words, the average syllables per word, and a per-word breakdown so you can verify each line of a poem or haiku. The algorithm is English-oriented and is an estimate, so a few irregular words may differ from a dictionary.

Because everything runs in your browser, you can paste lyrics, verse or speech drafts privately and the counts update instantly as you type.

How does the syllable counter work?
It counts groups of consecutive vowels as one syllable each, removes a trailing silent "e" (except "le" endings), and gives every word a minimum of one syllable. It is a fast English heuristic, not a perfect dictionary lookup.
Can I use this for haiku?
Yes. The per-word breakdown lets you check a 5-7-5 line by adding up the syllables in each word of a line. Because it is an estimate, double-check unusual words manually.
Why does a word show the wrong syllable count?
English syllable rules have many exceptions (for example "simile", "every", "rhythm"). The heuristic handles common patterns well but cannot match a full dictionary for every word.
Is my text private?
Yes. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so it is safe to paste unpublished poems or lyrics.
