How debt snowball calculator works
The debt snowball method pays off debts in order from smallest balance to largest, regardless of interest rate. You pay the minimum on every debt and throw all your extra cash at the smallest-balance debt first. When that debt is gone, the minimum you were paying on it rolls forward onto the next-smallest debt, so the amount attacking each successive debt grows like a snowball.
This calculator simulates that process month by month. Each month it accrues interest on every outstanding debt, pays each minimum, then applies your extra payment (plus the freed minimums of any debts already cleared) to the current target debt. It reports the payoff order, the month each debt is cleared, a payoff date from a start date you choose, total interest paid, and total paid.
The snowball is popular because clearing small debts fast gives quick wins that keep you motivated, even though it may cost slightly more in interest than the avalanche method (largest interest rate first). The psychological momentum is the whole point. This is a planning estimate for fixed-rate debts with level minimums and does not model rate changes, fees, or varying minimums.
Frequently asked questions
How is the snowball different from the avalanche method?
The snowball orders debts by balance, smallest first, for quick wins. The avalanche orders debts by interest rate, highest first, which usually costs the least in interest. The snowball trades a little extra interest for motivation. This calculator implements the snowball method.
What is the 'freed minimum' that rolls forward?
Once a debt is fully paid off, the minimum payment you were making on it each month is no longer needed. The snowball adds that freed amount to your extra payment and applies it to the next debt, so the money attacking each successive debt keeps growing.
What if my minimum payment doesn't cover the interest?
If a debt's minimum is smaller than its monthly interest, that debt's balance grows each month and may never pay off through minimums alone. The calculator will flag that payoff is not possible; you'll need a larger minimum or extra payment, or to prioritize that debt.
Do I have to enter a label for each debt?
No. Labels are optional — leaving a debt blank auto-labels it 'Debt 1', 'Debt 2', and so on. Enter a label like 'Visa' or 'Car loan' if you want it to show in the payoff order.
