How date countdown works

Enter a target date — a birthday, holiday, exam, wedding, or project deadline. The calculator counts the days between today (or a reference date you choose) and that target, so you know exactly how long is left.

The total number of days is also broken down into weeks (with leftover days) and into years, months, and days, which is easier to picture for longer spans. If the target date has already passed, the result is shown as time since instead of time until.

The reference date defaults to today in your browser. Change it to plan from a different starting point — for example, counting from the start of a project to its launch date, or from a past event to today.

Does the countdown use my local today?
Yes. The reference date defaults to today according to your browser's clock. You can override it with any reference date to count from a different starting point. Only calendar days are counted — the time of day is ignored.
What is the difference between this and a date difference calculator?
A date difference calculator gives the total days between two dates you both enter. This countdown tool fixes one side at today (or a reference date) and adds a friendly breakdown into weeks and into years, months and days, so it is tailored for counting down to a live event.
How are the weeks and months calculated?
Weeks are whole 7-day periods, with the leftover days shown separately. Years and months use the average lengths of 365.25 days per year and 30.44 days per month, so the breakdown is a close approximation rather than a calendar-precise count of named months.
What happens if the target date is in the past?
The result is shown as time since instead of time until, with the same days, weeks, and years/months breakdown. This is handy for seeing how long ago an event was, such as a birthday or anniversary.
