A LITTLE CONTEXT · 4 MIN READCPM Explained: What a Thousand Impressions Really Costs

How cpm calculator works

CPM — cost per mille, mille being Latin for thousand — is the price of 1,000 ad impressions. It is the standard pricing unit for display, video and awareness campaigns, and it lets you compare a $500 social campaign with a $50,000 video buy on the same scale. One million impressions at a $10 CPM costs $10,000; at a $2 CPM it costs $2,000.

The formula is CPM = (ad spend ÷ impressions) × 1,000. Enter your total ad spend and the impressions the platform reports, and the calculator returns the CPM plus impressions per dollar — how much raw reach each unit of budget buys.

Add clicks and the tool derives CPC (spend ÷ clicks) and CTR (clicks ÷ impressions), which connect the reach metric to engagement. Add conversions and it derives CPA (spend ÷ conversions) and the conversion rate from clicks, closing the chain from dollars spent to customers won. One input set, every pricing model benchmarked.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an impression?
An impression is one rendering of your ad on a screen, whether or not anyone looks at it. Platforms count served impressions slightly differently (some count when the ad loads, others when at least half the pixels have been visible for a second), so compare CPMs within a platform before comparing across platforms.
When should I use CPM instead of CPC?
Use CPM when the goal is visibility — brand campaigns, retargeting pools, content that earns value from being seen. Use CPC when the goal is traffic — you only pay when someone acts. The same campaign can be bought either way, which is why the calculator derives both from one spend-and-impressions input.
What is a good CPM?
It varies enormously by channel, format, geography and season. Instead of chasing a universal number, benchmark against your own history and against the alternatives: if one placement delivers a $4 CPM and another a $9 CPM for similar audiences, the cheaper one buys the same reach for about half the budget. Trends over time matter more than absolutes.
How do I compare a CPM buy with a CPA buy?
Work backward through the funnel. A $5 CPA with a 2% click-to-sale conversion rate implies $10 per click, which against a 1% CTR implies a $1,000 effective CPM. The calculator gives you CPC, CTR and CPA from the same inputs, so you can build that bridge yourself and see which pricing model is quietly more expensive.
